If you want your garage door to operate more smoothly and look nicer, there are a few things that you can do to improve the function of your garage door. You can grease all the moving parts, change the weatherstripping, and add insulation to your garage door in order to increase the performance of your garage door.

Grease All Moving Parts

One of the first things that you need to do is identify, clean, and grease all of the moving parts on your garage door. Most of the moving parts are going to be located on either side of the garage door, along the rails that the garage door moves along. If your garage door also has a center track on it, there may also be moving parts along the center track.

Use a rag to wipe down the moving parts. Use the rag to remove all grease and dirt that has built up on the moving parts. Make sure that your garage door is down and that everyone in your home knows that you are working on it so your garage door is not activated as you clean and grease the moving parts.

Once you clean the moving parts, apply grease to them. Don't drench them in grease; just add enough to lightly lubricate all the moving parts.

Change the Weatherstripping

Overtime, the weatherstripping on your door is going to get worn down. Weatherstripping eventually succumbs to the effects of the weather, drying out and cracking. When this happens, your weatherstripping will no longer keep your garage door well sealed.

You can easily pick up weatherstripping at a local hardware store. Pull the old weatherstripping off your garage door and use a knife to scrape the old putty. Weatherstripping often comes with an adhesive back, so all you have to do is place it and push down on it to install the new weatherstripping. You can also use adhesive to stick the weatherstripping in place.

Add Insulation

Finally, if your garage door is not that thick, you may want to add insulation to your garage door. Adding insulation to your garage door will help keep the temperature inside of your garage door more consistent throughout the year, keeping your garage warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Improve the function of your garage door by cleaning and greasing all of the moving parts, changing out the weatherstripping, and adding insulation to your garage door. These three steps will ensure that your garage door operates smoothly and quietly and also helps keep your garage space well-insulated and comfortable.
